In recent discussions of fast food, a controversial issue has been whether fast food restaurants should be allowed in hospital cafeterias and lobbies, particularly in children hospitals. On one hand, some argue that it is easier, cheaper, and faster. People do not want to pay for an expensive meal especially with already having to pay large medical bills. No one wants to leave a loved one in the hospital room alone while they go get food. Also it is, fast for nurses and doctors to get in a quick meal before going back to work. From this perspective fast food in hospital cafeterias is a benefit, not only for the companies but, also clients in a rush. On the other hand, however, others, including myself, argue that is not healthy and rather ironic. If people eat a large amount of fast food they could end up in the hospital from diabetes, obesity, heart disease, or artery disease. In the words of Ethan A. Huff, one of this view’s main proponents, “If hospitals were truly about health, they would focus on serving more organic, grass-fed, and 'superfood' items ”. According to this view, hospitals encourage good health they should also be encouraging healthy food choices. In sum, then, the issue is whether fast food in hospitals, should be banned or not.
My own view is that fast food should be banned from hospitals. Fast food restaurants in hospitals are nothing but a bad temptation. Children are not eating healthy food like they should. Unhealthy food can become addicting. If children begin eating fast food at a young age they can become addicted and continue to eat it for years leading to serious medical issues. We need to take a stand and promote healthy food and try to ban fast food in children hospitals. Though I concede it does bring in business, it is easier, and faster, I still believe that fast food should not be sold in children hospitals and healthier food needs to be put in children hospitals.
For example, people who are in the hospitals are usually suffering from an illness, or disease; therefore, their health is not the finest. These patients need healthy food that will help them get better, not unhealthy, fast food products that will only cause more health issues. Fast food could potentially be the initial cause of a patients health issues. Although some might object that fast food is a choice, I would reply that in hospitals it is hardly a choice, it is usually the only option, and if it is not then the other choices are not much healthier and usually do not taste good.
The issue is important because fast food foods are full of unhealthy ingredients and have enormous calorie counts. With little to no other food options, clients do not have the option of healthy food choices. Hospitals need to change this, and ban fast food restaurants from the cafeterias and the lobbies. They need to add food carts or restaurants that are just as fast, cheap, sell healthy foods high in protein, and nutrients. This could include premade sandwiches, salads, fruit cups, or having a sandwich bar, salad bar, or fruit bat, with health drinks instead of soda and other sugary drinks. Hospitals can still sell treats, snacks and desserts, but there need to have healthier options.
